About UsThe Four Pillars of Fraternity & Sorority Life
ScholarshipThe Iowa Fraternity & Sorority Community is known for high scholarship and academic excellence. Chapters maintain grade point average (GPA) requirements for membership and initiation. To assure continuing academic growth, chapters provide scholarship assistance through tutoring, academic advising, scholarships and awards. Iowa fraternity & sorority members pride themselves in maintaining GPA's consistently above their non-Greek counterparts. The "All-Fraternity/Sorority Average" GPA is consistently above the All-University average. Studies show that being in the fraternity and sorority community also ensures a higher likelihood of graduation compared with students not involved.
LeadershipFraternity and sorority life provides students with a wide variety of leadership opportunities. Members can participate within their chapters as an officer or on one of the committees each chapter maintains. There are also opportunities to become involved with one of the four governing councils for the chapters (IFC, MGC, NPHC or PHC). For members to achieve a well-rounded education, fraternities and sororities encourage active participation in leadership experiences.
ServiceProviding community service is an integral part of fraternity and sorority life. In addition to community service, each chapter sponsors annual events to raise money for worthwhile local and national philanthropies. Helping others will undoubtedly be one of the most rewarding experiences a fraternity or sorority member can have. In 2011-2012, UI Greeks contributed over 22,000 hours of their time to community service. The Iowa Fraternity & Sorority Community is also very active in the Dance Marathon even held annually, and in 2012, chapter members raised $280,000 of the over $1,300,000 raised by Iowa students!
FriendshipWhen alumni of Greek chapters are asked to name the most rewarding part of being Greek, most say "the friendships I gained and maintained through the years." Fraternities and sororities build a bond of brotherhood and sisterhood unmatched by any other student organization. Each chapter has its own social calendar, which typically includes formals, date parties, Mom's and Dad's days, and functions with other chapters. In addition, intramurals, step shows, Homecoming and Greek Week are enjoyed by Iowa Greek members.
